Simply Orthodox ☦

This is the blog of an Eastern Orthodox Christian girl from Greece. Welcome to my Orthodox Christian corner! :) Here you can find interesting texts and quotes about Orthodoxy. I made this blog because I would like everyone to discover the Orthodox Christianity. This is the ultimate purpose of this blog: to share my faith! I ask forgiveness if in this blog any of my passions are acting, hindering the Grace of the Holy Spirit because of my sins.

Feel free to send me any prayer requests or anything you want. God bless you all! May the Holy Spirit enlighten you always!

-- PS. I don't own any of the photos I post here. The majority of them are from sites like weheartit.com. Though generally I try to post the sourse of the photos I post, I don't want to break copyright, so if I have used your picture/text without your permission, please let me know and I'll be more than happy to add credit or to delete it. You can e-mail me at anytime here: simplyorthodox(at)yahoo(dot)com (New e-mail address) --

Dear visitor of this blog,

I have no financial, or other profits of this humble blog. The only thing I am asking you is to say a small prayer for me to Jesus from your heart for the salvation of my soul. So, please stop for some seconds and pray for me, the sinner. If you are an Orthodox Christian, please light a candle for me. Thank you, may God bless you...

Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunted not itself, is not puffed up.

Advice For Those Living in the West

"Do not be afraid because of your Orthodoxy; do not be afraid because, as an Orthodox in the West, you will be often isolated and always in a small minority. Do not make compromises but do not attack other Christians; do not be either defensive or aggressive; simply be yourself."

"Something I found of interest during my initial classes of the Orthodox faith, was to learn that in the history of the Orthodox Christian Church, it wasn’t until the eleventh century when the Bishop of Rome (Western Church) separated himself from the other Bishops of the world (Eastern Church) to form what we now refer to as the Roman Catholic Church. The Church of the East is the Orthodox Church. Then, in the sixteenth century the fragmentation of the Roman Catholic/Western Church began with the Protestant Reformation. Only the Orthodox Church remains as the one, united church for the past two thousand years."

- An Orthodox Christian convert

This is the way we should see Christ. He is our friend, our brother; He is whatever is good and beautiful. He is everything. Yet, He is still a friend and He shouts it out, “You’re my friends, don’t you understand that? We’re brothers. I’m not…I don’t hold hell in my hands. I am not threatening you. I love you. I want you to enjoy life together with me.”

- Elder Porphyrios

The saints speak of that which they have truly seen and know

Each of us can discuss God inasmuch as he has known the grace of the Holy Spirit; for how can we think of or discuss what we haven’t seen, or haven’t head of, or don’t know? The saints say that they have seen God, but there are people who say that there is no God. Clearly, they say this because they haven’t known God, but this does not at all mean that He is not. The saints speak of that which they have truly seen and know.

spiritualinspiration:

God knows your value; He sees your potential. You may not understand everything you are going through right now. But hold your head up high, knowing that God is in control and he has a great plan and purpose for your life. Your dreams may not have turned out exactly as you’d hoped, but the bible says that God’s ways are better and higher than our ways, even when everybody else rejects you, remember, God stands before you with His arms open wide. He always accepts you. He always confirms your value. You are His prized possession. No matter what you go through in life, no matter how many disappointments you suffer, your value in God’s eyes always remains the same. You will always be the apple of His eye. He will never give up on you, so don’t give up on yourself.

Repentance is the ship and fear is the pilot

As it is not possible to cross over the great ocean without a ship, so no one can attain to love without fear. The foetid sea, which lies between us and the noetic paradise, we may cross by the boat of repentance, whose oarsmen are those of fear. But if fear’s oarsmen do not pilot the barque of repentance whereby we cross over the sea of this world to God, we shall be drowned in the foetid abyss. Repentance is the ship and fear is the pilot; love is the divine haven.

Feel the power of God

So if you wish to see many miracles – you should become a missionary or a martyr. They say that if you wish to anoint someone with myrrh you should pour it into your hand and smell it yourself, and only then anoint another person. It is the same thing here: if you wish to tell another about the power of God, you should first feel the power of God yourself.

A message from Anonymous
Hello! I've one question about doing the sign of the cross. Do you have to be in front of an icon or can you do even if you don't have an icon?

Hello my dear friend!

For the Orthodox Christian, making the sign of the cross is a natural thing, like when we breath. You can do the sign of the cross everywhere, in every place you are, whenever you feel the need to do it. If, for example, you feel the need to make the sign of the cross when you sit in front of your laptop, for example, feel free to do it! We can always pray and thank God! The sign of the cross is a very simple way to make a prayer anytime during the day.

However, don’t forget that some other occasions that we also must cross ourselves when we enter the Church, whenever all three persons of the Trinity are addressed, in front of icons, as you mentioned, and when we pass in front of a Church.

I hope this helps, God bless you!

My poor soul…

My poor soul! Sigh, pray and strive to take upon you the blessed yoke of Christ, and you will live on earth in a heavenly manner. Lord, grant that I may carry the light and goodly yoke, and I shall be always at rest, peaceful, glad and joyous; and I shall taste on earth of crumbs which fall from the celestial feast, like a dog that feeds upon the crumbs which fall from the master’s table.

The one thing needful

What do I need? I need true and active Christian love; I need a loving heart which takes compassion on its neighbors; I need joy over their prosperity and well-being, and sorrow over their sorrows and illnesses, their sins, failings, disorders, woes, poverty; I need warm and sincere compassion for all the circumstances of their lives, joy for those who are joyous and tears for those who are in tears. Enough of selfishness, egoism, living only for oneself and acquiring everything only for oneself: riches, pleasures, the glory of this world; enough of spiritual dying instead of living, grieving instead of rejoicing, and carrying within oneself the poison of selfishness, for selfishness is a poison that is continuously poured into our hearts by Satan.

What are your virtues?

One day, while St. Antony was sitting with a certain Abba, a virgin came up and said to the Elder: ‘Abba, I fast six days of the week and I repeat by heart portions of the Old and New Testament daily. To which the Elder replied: ‘Does poverty mean the same to you as abundance?’ ‘No’, she answered. ‘Or dishonour the same as praise?’ ‘No, Abba.’ ‘Are your enemies the same for you as your friends?’ ‘No’, she replied. At that the wise Elder said to her: ‘Go, get to work; you have accomplished nothing.’

Leavetaking of Pascha (Commemorated on June 12 according to New Calendar)

On Wednesday of the sixth week of Pascha, we celebrate the Leavetaking of the Feast. While most Feasts have their Leavetaking on the eighth day, Pascha, the Feast of Feasts, has its Leavetaking on the thirty-ninth day. The fortieth day is the Feast of the Lord’s Ascension, which marks the end of the Lord’s physical presence on earth. He does not abandon us, however. He has promised to be with us always, even until the end of the age (MT 20:28). As we sing in the Kontakion for Ascension, “Thou didst ascend in glory, O Christ our God, not being parted from those who love Thee, but remaining with them and crying: I am with you and no one will be against you.” There is a similar thought expressed in the Troparion for the Dormition: “In falling asleep, you did not forsake the world, O Theotokos.”

The services today are celebrated just as on the day of Pascha itself. The daily readings from Holy Scripture, of course, will differ. After the Dismissal at Liturgy, the paschal hymns are no longer sung. The prayer “O Heavenly King” is not said or sung until Pentecost. The Winding Sheet (Plaschanitsa) is taken from the altar and is put in its proper place. Even though today is a Wednesday, fish, wine, and oil are permitted.

Today we also commemorate the Finding of the Icon of the Mother of God “Of the Meeting” in Kalamata in the Peloponnesus.
